Cliff Lee Traded to Rangers for Justin Smoak
Texas Rangers

Tyler Kepner of The New York Times reports that the New York Yankees , contenders in the bidding for Mariners ace Cliff Lee , feel they were a pawn in the deal that sent the top name in trade deadline rumors to the Texas Rangers. He writes:

"Nobody likes to feel used, and privately, that was the Yankees' prevailing sentiment on Friday, when the Seattle Mariners traded the All-Star left-hander Cliff Lee to the Texas Rangers for a four-player package headlined by Justin Smoak, a switch-hitting first baseman they had coveted for weeks."

Kepner also points out that the Yankees' desire to acquire the 2008 Cy Young winner isn't over.

"The Yankees plan to pursue Lee aggressively in free agency this November, so they had been reluctant to trade some of their best prospects just to get him a few months early. But they are well-stocked at catcher, with Francisco Cervelli, J. R. Murphy, Austin Romine and Gary Sanchez, and they also were comfortable parting with second baseman David Adams."
