NFL Umpire Position Change

The NFL has decided to move the umpire from his customary spot on the defensive side of the ball just behind the inside linebackers to the offensive side adjacent to the referee and 15 yards off the line of scrimmage.

The umpire will return to his position on the defensive side of the ball with two minutes remaining in each half to be able to expedite the spotting of the ball.

Holding in the NFL has dropped significantly recently. It went from a high of 3.5 holding calls per game in 2005 all the way down to 2.5 last year or some 234 less per season.

But with the change, there is sure to be a significant upswing in calls.

"We don't know yet, but that is sort of the speculation, that we will probably see more offensive holding," said Jeff Triplette, a veteran referee.

The NFL has experimented with moving the umpire before, but decided to make it a permanent spot after numerous injuries occurred. In one game last year, umpire Garth DeFelice was knocked down four times.
