Libertarian Party

Why Libertarians Oppose ObamaCare

Libertarian Party Chairman William Redpath comments on the recently passed health care bill:

"We oppose this horrible federal government expansion into health care, just as we have consistently opposed all the increased government intrusion into health care proposed by Republicans and Democrats over the years. For example, we vocally opposed the huge Medicare expansion pushed through Congress by Republicans in 2003."

Redpath continued, "It is a virtual certainty that the cost estimates of this legislation are drastically understated. When Medicare Part A started in 1965, the projected cost for 1990 was $9 billion. It turned out to be $67 billion. Should this bill become law, when the debt of the United States government is downgraded by ratings agencies shortly thereafter, it will not be a coincidence. That will increase interest rates, and the entire economy will suffer."

The Libertarian Party Platform says the following about health care: "We favor restoring and reviving a free market health care system. We recognize the freedom of individuals to determine the level of health insurance they want, the level of health care they want, the care providers they want, the medicines and treatments they will use and all other aspects of their medical care, including end-of-life decisions."

The words "health care" and "medicine" are not found anywhere in the Constitution. Accordingly, the Libertarian Party asserts that Congress has no authority to regulate or appropriate money for health care. (The Libertarian Party has consistently argued for decades that the "general welfare" and "interstate commerce" clauses are not generic authorizations for spending and regulation.)

Redpath concluded, "This is a top-down, Washington-mandated control of health insurance and health care in this nation. It is the antithesis of consumer-driven health care, which is what will ultimately be necessary to control health care costs and to provide the best health care for the greatest number of people."

The Libertarian Party is America's third-largest political party, founded in 1971. The Libertarian Party stands for free markets and civil liberties.  www.lp.org/

YOU LIE ! $210 Billion Tax increase includes some making $125,000

“Under my plan, no family making less than $250,000 a year will see any form of tax increase,” Obama said on Feb. 4, 2009. “Not your income tax, not your payroll tax, not your capital gains taxes, not any of your taxes.”- Barack Obama

Raising the Medicare tax on wages would raise an estimated $87 billion over 10 years. But when combined with a new Medicare tax on "unearned income", the revenue collected will jump to $210 billion, making it the biggest single revenue raiser to pay for health reform.

A package of amendments to the Senate-passed health care bill  include a new tax on unearned income. Pelosi said this tax would cover all unearned income, “whatever category that is.”  This tax was a concession to the Unions, who told Obama that they would not support the Senate bill if it imposed a tax on generous so called "Cadillac" insurance plans for union members.

The tax, originally proposed by President Barack Obama, will levy a 3.8% increase on all “unearned income” for so called "high earners".

The tax will exempt only those married couples, filing jointly, who make under $250,000 a year, and any other taxpayer making under $200,000 per year.

This distinction between married, joint filers and everyone else means that the new tax apparently violates Obama’s pledge that “no family making less than $250,000 per year” would see a tax increase.

“Under my plan, no family making less than $250,000 a year will see any form of tax increase,” Obama said on Feb. 4, 2009. “Not your income tax, not your payroll tax, not your capital gains taxes, not any of your taxes.”

In fact, the plan levies the tax specifically at any “married taxpayer filing a separate return” who makes more than $125,000 per year.

The tax will also hit any inheritance a person might receive if that person falls into the categories above: joint filers making more than $250,000 per year and everyone else making more than $200,000 per year.

In addition, the Medicare payroll tax is going up for individuals making more than $200,000 in wages, and couples making more than $250,000.

Currently, the Medicare payroll tax is 2.9% on all wages -- with the worker and his employer each paying 1.45%.

Under the new law, starting in 2013, high-income individuals will pay another 0.9 percentage points -- so their share will total 2.35% of their wages.

“This is essential to strengthen Medicare, and in this legislation we will make it solvent for nine more years,” Pelosi claimed. "The Medicare fee is 'help for health.' In our bill we have a surcharge at the high end – this is a health fee on unearned income.”

In other words, its a matter of when, not if, ALL taxpayers will be subject to an additional 3.8% tax levy on ALL their income, including  "unearned income" which has ALWAYS been exempt from both Medicare & FICA (Social Security) taxes.

“Unearned income” is all income that is not earned. Some common types of unearned income are:

In-kind support and maintenance (food or shelter) given to an individual or received by an individual because someone else paid for it (see §§2140-2142);

Private pensions and annuities;

Periodic public payments such as Social Security benefits, Railroad Retirement benefits, Department of Veterans Affairs pension and compensation payments, civil service annuities, workers’ compensation, unemployment compensation, and payments based on need involving Federal funds;

Life insurance proceeds and other death benefits, to the extent that the total amount is more than the expenses of the deceased person’s last illness and burial paid by the individual;

Gifts and inheritances;

Support and alimony payments in cash or in-kind;

Prizes and awards;

Dividends and interest;

Rents and royalties (except those royalties defined as earned income); and

Certain payments not considered wages for Social Security purposes:

In-kind payments to certain agricultural workers;

Tips under $20 per month;

Jury fees;

House Passes the Reconciliation bill 220-207

The amendment bill, which included the fixes that had been made to the Senate health care bill, will now go to the president to sign.

Democrats are arrogantly predicting that the public will warm up to the ObamaCare Law since only the popular provisions kick in immediately. The huge tax hikes & increases in insurance premiums don't take effect until after November mid term elections.

The Liar in Chief will be feeding you bullshit for the next seven months why telling you it's fillet mignon.  Obama has gone on the record, saying that he welcomes a Repeal & Replace GOP campaign, "I welcome that fight".

Be careful what you wish for there Chief.  Nancy Pelosi  is THE face of the radical left agenda. Good luck with that!   Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid won't even be able to get re-elected in his home state of Nevada in November.  Keith Olberman, Chris Mattews, Ed Schultz and Rachael Maddow, stars of  the ObamaNation "political" network,  will lose more votes for the Democrats than they will gain for them.

Far left Democrats have done what the Libertarian Party has been trying to do since 1971. The United States Constitution is front and center for the first time since the 1930's.

Democrats have brought attention to the Progressive agenda that has been eroding our liberty and this Republic for decades. Those who were once blinded by billionaire Marxists can now see. The Obamarx agenda to redistribute wealth and convert capitalism to statism is now in full view public view.

Over 66% of those Independents most likely to vote in November want GOP to continue trying to repeal and replace Obamacare.  88% of Republicans & 44% of your own party are against the HC law that you rammed through Congress and signed, against the will of the vast majority of the people.

The GOP will swell the tidal wave of outrage, using your own words and actions.  In addition to exposing Obama's favorite lie that not one  family making less than $250,000 will see a dime's tax increase as a result of the passage of Obamacare.  Look for reminders like this, from the June 30, 2009 LA Times, one of the most liberal newspapers in America:

Reporting from Washington — President Obama suggested at a town hall event Wednesday night that one way to shave medical costs is to stop expensive and ultimately futile procedures performed on people who are about to die and don't stand to gain from the extra care.

In a nationally televised event at the White House, Obama said families need better information so they don't unthinkingly approve "additional tests or additional drugs that the evidence shows is not necessarily going to improve care."

He added: "Maybe you're better off not having the surgery, but taking the painkiller."

There's an interesting contradiction here. According to the pro-choice perspective, it's outrageous for the state to interfere in a woman's decision to terminate a pregnancy. But it's pragmatic and reasonable for the state to consider terminating a person, if some money can be saved.

I predict Democrats will lose at 50 seats and the House as a result of the mid term elections in November.  John McCain carried 49 Congressional Districts in 2008 that have seats presently occupied by a Democrat.  There are 33 districts held by Republicans that Obama won in 2008.

Those 33 will make the difference between majority and minority status for Democrats in next year.  How many of those Districts do you think will be taken by the Democrats in November?  I would set the over/under at 1 and feel confident taking the UNDER today.
