Gawker Hacked- Passwords Compromised

The blog network that likes to poke fun at everyone now has all the fingers pointed its way.

An anonymous group has claimed responsibility for a security breach that appears to have compromised media network Gawker's user data –– which could include up to 1.5 million usernames, emails and passwords. If you own a Gawker user account then this is probably a good time to stop what you're doing and change those passwords. If you use the same user/password combo for another network, definitely change that too.

The group responsible for the hack still hasn't shared its identity, but one source has come forward to Mediaite with the explanation that the Gawker empire invited the attack because of its "outright arrogance." In the past, Gawker has poked fun at the 4Chan hacker group, though the anonymous group has said that it is not from 4Chan.

Anybody who registered with any of Gawker's sites--Gawker, Gizmodo, Jezebel, Lifehacker, io9, Jalopnik, Kotaku, Deadspin and Fleshbot--is at risk, unless they logged in using Facebook Connect, according to an FAQ on Lifehacker. The exposed data includes a bunch of e-mail addresses of workers at federal, state, and local government agencies, that PBS Newshour reports appear to have been separated out for possible future attacks.
